Transportation system monitoring and managing of real‐time traffic operations.

We’re continuing to monitor our transportation system closely during the Seattle Squeeze, and we’re making adjustments in real time to traffic signals and traffic lanes so we can safely get people and goods where they need to go.

What we’ve done.

  • We began staffing the Transportation Operations Center 24/7 in October to ensure we are closely monitoring and managing incidents at all times. Our staff make sure that traffic signals are working well and alert first responders if there’s a crash or other incident on our streets
  • Our SDOT Response Team (SRT) clears blockages and prevents traffic backups 24/7 by promptly removing debris in the street, moving vehicles out of the traffic lane after an accident, assisting stranded motorists, providing emergency traffic control for incidents, and responding to issues with traffic signals
  • We’re sharing construction and traffic data with Google Maps, Waze, and TomTom to ensure accurate and timely data sharing with these technology providers
  • We added more traffic cameras and travel time detectors to know how quickly traffic is moving
  • We put in new traffic signal timing plans around the north and south portals of the SR 99 tunnel and in downtown to help signals be more responsive to changing traffic volumes
  • We’re continuing to update the SDOT Travelers Map, where you can find information about construction, planned events, traffic incidents, bridge openings, railroad crossings and travel times on main streets

What we’re doing now.

  • We’ll be revising traffic signal timing operations when buses come out of the Downtown Seattle Transit Tunnel on March 23, 2019
  • We’re conducting real-time transportation system performance monitoring and making needed adjustments
  • We’re working with the stadiums on their transportation operations plans
  • Along with continuing to share construction and traffic data, we’re communicating with technology providers about closures and reroutes that do not fit into the real-time feeds
