We have all been through a lot over the last year-and-a-half. The pandemic changed the way that we live and work in the city and region. For many Seattleites, it meant that daily commutes to downtown disappeared; for others, in-person work continued on the front-line. Your transportation agencies have kept working to keep you safe and to deliver the transformative construction projects that continue to change how we all get around. The #SeattleSqueeze continued in early 2020 as construction changes in downtown Seattle continued to impact how we get around – here’s what happened in this chapter of the Seattle Squeeze.
On March 23, 2019, those buses moved permanently to downtown streets as a key step in the transition to light-rail-only in the tunnel. This big change was in Chapter Two of the Seattle Squeeze, with downtown bus riders finding their bus stops in new locations, and a new bus-only lane on 6th Avenue.

Remember the Viaduct? It closed permanently on January 11, 2019 initiating a full three-week closure of SR 99 downtown before the new SR 99 tunnel opened. At that time, approximately 250,000 people commuted to and from downtown each day.
